Identify a Rug

How to Identify Your Rug

First, check the back of the rug. Locate the tag on one of the four corners of your rug. (Some antique Oriental rugs may be missing the tag.)

Synthetic rugs typically have a tag stating the material they are made of. The backings of synthetic rugs are usually firm.

A rug is likely to be wool if the pattern on the back of the rug matches that of the front. A wool pile is soft to the touch on both sides of the rug.

Silk rugs have a lower pile than wool and synthetic rugs. They also have very intricate designs and a shimmering effect. When rubbed vigorously, silk will heat up.
